REEKIE TO THE RESCUE

Reekie Machining had a slow start to machining on Monday morning as the staff admired a very special visitor that had landed over the weekend.  Vicky, a Mark II,  1939 Battle of Britain Spitfire replica, had developed a problem with her tail wheel bracket during filming for David Walliams, Grandpa’s Great Escape, Christmas Day special at former India Tyre Factory in Inchinnan.   It required immediate attention to keep the filming on track and the first name to be thought of, that could help, was Reekie Machining.

The tail wheel bracket required repair and rather than the work being carried out on site, she was brought into the machine shop where with some turning and welding she was ready to return to set the next morning.

For a 78 year old war hero and film star, she had very few demands!  She was  flown by Iain Duncan Smiths father during the Battle of Britain and this is not her first time being filmed, having appeared earlier this year in the film “Dunkirk”.

Vicky is just one of the Spitfires that has been lovingly restored and looked after by The Lytham St. Annes Spitfire Display Team.  For more information about them see www.spitfiredisplayteam.co.uk

This extends our already impressive range of equipment which includes the Faro Laser Tracker Xi, a 3D portable, contact measurement system that uses laser technology to accurately measure large parts of up to 70 metres in diameter with an accuracy of up to 0.025mm. This is in addition to laser flatness & shaft alignment survey equipment, as well as our large range of conventional measuring equipment. Other services available from Reekie’s include In situ machining Subcontract machining Portable spark erosion Portable machine tool design and manufacture Reekie Machining were supported by Invest in Renfrewshire in purchasing the equipment. SUCCESSFUL ON SITE MACHINING AT A COAL / BIOMASS POWER STATION: TURNING, FACING, DRILLING AND TAPPING.

Reekie were recently called in to machine the 240mm diameter x 195mm end of a reclaimer shaft that was heavily damaged by a slipping bearing. The job was located inside a biomass storage unit at a traditionally coal fired powered station in the North East of England. We used our JS29 turning machine, set true to an undamaged section, to remove damage marks and create a journal that was round and parallel within 0.05mm. An oversize sleeve, machined at our workshop in Renfrew, was then shrunk on. We then finish machined the new sealing diameter and bearing diameter. After facing the end of the shaft to clean up, we drilled and tapped four M30 32mm diameter x 50mm holes. The team were regularly interrupted due to ongoing transportation of biomass fuel in and around the area but coped admirably to complete the job successfully.
